The San Diego Union Tribute has written a piece on Sustainable Tourism in San Diego, "Guide touts eco-friendly tourism". Dr Jess Ponting, who recently completed his doctorate at the School of Leisure, Sport, and Tourism of the Faculty of Business, UTS comments.
His doctoral investigation was concerned with developing conceptual tools to ensure local communities are empowered to control their destiny as global surf capital extends its reach. His research overlaps into the ownership of property rights in the natural surf resource - the wave as well as related tourism facilities.
Dr Jess Ponting currently lectures in School of Tourism and Hospitality Management in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts, San Diego State University, having previously worked at the University of the South Pacific.
He and his wife, Sandra Sun-Ah Ponting, a tourism consultant, recently published the state’s first handbook on sustainable tourism. The 30-page online booklet is a guide for how one of California’s largest economic sectors can become more eco-friendly. It serves as a primer for greening hotels, restaurants, theme parks and related businesses. It’s also required for some tourism classes at SDSU.
