Leisure, Sport and Tourism PhD students joined 600 international participants in the Ajax Amsterdam ArenA

The 17th Conference of the European Association for Sport Management (EASM) took place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from 16-19 September 2009. Four PhD students from the UTS School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism joined 600 international participants in the Ajax Amsterdam ArenA for academic workshops, creative seminars and over 200 scientific sessions. As the highlight of the conference, the gala dinner was enjoyed in the stadium’s VIP area during the Europe League football match between Ajax Amsterdam and FC Timisoara from Rumania.

For his paper “Maximising Sport Event Benefits: Sustaining and Leveraging Socio-Cultural Impacts” Nico Schulenkorf was awarded ‘Runner-Up’ at this year’s New Researchers Award. At the UTS: School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism, Nico has recently completed his PhD on the role of sport events in contributing to social development between disparate communities. For his long-term involvement in sport peace projects in the ethnically divided Sri Lanka he was previously awarded the UTS Vice Chancellor’s Social Justice and Human Rights Award.
