Trends in Environmental Research Series - Thoughtful Birds in Action

Film Presenters: Drs Culum Brown, K-Lynn Smith and Deirdre Cobbin present "Thoughtful Birds In Action: Mental Feats the Avian Way"

Humans have long admired themselves as being exceptionally intelligent and a list of cognitive traits seemed to separate us from the rest of the animal kingdom. In recent years this list has begun to erode. This film explores the remarkable cognitive ability of birds by drawing on the work of an international list of key researchers in the field. Using a variety of novel, experimental and field approaches, we demonstrate that birds are capable of counting, have lateralised brains and can solve novel problems using insight.
