Health Economics in Cancer Research: A Consumer's Guide

The Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation (CHERE) has been contracted by Cancer Australia to continue to provide health economics services to the Multisite National Cancer Collaborative Clinical Trials Groups through the Cancer Research Economics Support Team (CREST). Capacity building is a key component of the services available from CREST, and we are pleased to announce a CREST workshop to be hosted by the Western Australian Clinical Oncology Group in WA.

This introductory workshop is for those working or interested in cancer research who may encounter health economics in research papers or policy documents, or who would like to consider how health economics may be incorporated into their own practice or research. Participants in the workshop will receive course notes, including copies of the slides presented on the day, references used as examples throughout the workshop, and additional useful readings.

Workshop Program

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • fundamental concepts in health economics;
  • how health economics is used in the context of collecting and using clinical trial information;
  • how consumer data (from within trials, clinical practice or from surveys) might be used in health economic analyses;
  • the processes of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee and the Medical Services Advisory Committee; and
  • the role consumers play in providing data and shaping how evidence is viewed through thereimbursement process.

As well as presenters from the CREST team, Jo Watson (the consumer representative on the PBAC) will be presenting on the day. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Participants will need to arrange their own travel to and from the workshop. CREST is unable to provide travel assistance for this workshop
.

Workshop places are limited. To register, please send your name, trial group affiliation and whether you have any dietary requirements to: Richard De Abreu Lourenço
