Workshop: Developing and applying models in economic evaluations of cancer care

The Centre for Health Economics Research and Evaluation (CHERE) has been contracted by Cancer Australia to provide health economics services to the Multisite National Cancer Collaborative Clinical Trials Groups through the Cancer Research Economics Support Team (CREST). Capacity building is a key component of the services available from CREST, and we are pleased to announce a CREST workshop to be hosted by CHERE at the UTS campus.

This workshop is for those who have a basic understanding of economic evaluation theory and/or methods, and who are interested in extending their knowledge of modelling within economic evaluations. It will build on knowledge gained from attending the introductory CREST workshop, or similar background exposure to economic evaluations. Attendance would be suited to those working or interested in cancer research who might encounter health economics in research papers, policy documents, or who would like to consider how health economics might be incorporated into their own practice or research.

Workshop Program
The workshop comprises a mix of lectures and hands-on computing sessions in which participants will gain experience building models using the software package TreeAge. Topics to be covered include:

  • Decision tree models (incorporating costs and quality of life, extrapolating beyond trial data);
  • Markov models (incorporating costs and quality of life, extrapolating beyond trial data, and addressing uncertainty); and
  • Interpreting model outputs for economic evaluations.

Participants in the workshop will receive course notes, references used as examples in the workshop and supplementary reading lists. Lunch and refreshments will be provided on both days.

Enrollment to this workshop is limited to 20 participants. Participants will need to arrange their own travel to and from the workshop. CREST is unable to provide travel assistance for this workshop.
