Biography
David Burns creates objects and situations that explore the relationship between space and image. His work produces moments in which the simple differentiation between two-dimensional and three-dimensional is challenged. The evolution of his practice is based on the understanding that space and image now occupy a similar domain and possess a shared lexicon.
Burns is the director of newly formed Bachelor of Design in Photography and Situated Media within the School of Design at the University of Technology, Sydney. The foundation of the new degree is an understanding that the education of a photographer must include a study of space, culture, and emerging technologies. The introduction of a binary relationship with “situated media” provides this expansion. The coupling of these two disciplines creates a productive tension and a relational investigation that elevates the discussion to one based in experimentation and speculation.
Educated at Columbia University (MSAAD, 2000) and the University of Tennessee (BArch, 1996), Burns’ career has included working at leading design offices and institutions in the United States such as Asymptote Architecture, the Guggenheim Museum, Carnegie Mellon University, among others. Since 2001 he has taught at universities in the United States and Australia in schools of design, art and architecture.
His work has been exhibited in Australia, Canada, Italy, Russia and the United States, including the 2000 and 2008 Venice Architecture Biennales and the 2001 Arch Moscow. Selected publications include Young Blood (AD, London), Architectural Laboratories (NAi, Rotterdam), Less Aesthetics, More Ethics (Marsilio, Venice), Metropolis Magazine, Architectural Record, Architecture Australia, Architecture Review Australia, Domus, and Abitare.
