Master of Education (Research)

Lisa Groves

Why did you choose UTS?
I first chose to study at UTS undertaking the Bachelor of Arts in Organisational Learning over other Human Resource degrees offered by other universities as this degree offered a work experience component which of course would be highly valuable to starting out in the HR field. I then continued on at UTS (this is my 5th year here) as I was very happy with the university in what it had to offer in the choice of degrees, subjects and the faculty I am in is very supportive of students undertaking research and providing assistance in furthering students in their research degrees; offering an array of seminars lecturer and student run

What motivated you to undertake a research program?
I chose to undertake this research program for three reasons;

1.to challenge my self academically
2.to gain experience in the research field overseeing and partaking in what I am interested in researching that is really only offered through undertaking a research degree, and;
3.to develop my understanding, skills and knowledge in my chosen career, which will provide me with opportunities and broader employment options and choices.

What did you personally gain from your studies?
A sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in my work

What is your research topic?
Working title: Vocational Education and Learning in the Military Context

Research question: How transferable are military acquired VET skills to the civilian workplace?

What was it like to be a research student at UTS?
It is really great being a research student at UTS because there is so much support offered through forums, seminars, the opportunities to discuss with other students the difficulties and triumphs of undertaking a research study, and the openness of lecturers and faculty members to discuss the research you are undertaking.

Is there any advice you would give to students who are studying this program?
The advice that I would offer anyone undertaking, or who would like to undertake, a research degree is that you have to be self motivating as undertaking a research study demands hours of your time to be dedicated to researching the work and studies of others who have paved the way in your research field. In addition to this I would strongly recommend that a good supervisor is sought who will assist you in achieving your goals, and encourage you to stay motivated and focused.
