Jordan Nguyen is working on a semiautonomous wheelchair system which will allow severely disabled people to control their chairs using only the power of their minds and some head movement. Jordan explains how the chair operates. "The chair uses brain-computer interfaces or head movements to control the movement, depending on the level of user's disability. At the same time the wheelchair uses cameras to see and, based on the user's intentions, intelligently decides how to avoid obstacles by pre-planning its path."
Jordan commenced this research as part of his final year undergraduate project and was awarded a scholarship to continue the research. He commenced the Doctor of Philosophy in 2009.
