Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

"I chose UTS:IT because it provides the most practical and relevant education in the field of IT where emphasis is placed on building solid foundations in not only the technical but also the business facets of the industry.

I decided to do Business/IT because it allows me the flexibility to enter different fields and will not limit me to a desk job because in today’s society business co-exists with IT and it is IT that provides a business with a competitive edge. I also love the fact that the course content in both my degrees complement each other so well.
I love my course because it’s got variety. I’ve got lectures, tutorials and even labs. I can be studying for programming one day and be looking at ways to finance a project the next day. It’s never monotonous because I can always switch between my IT and Business subjects. I never saw myself as a business student in high school because I thought it was boring but after starting my degree I found it to be interesting and very relevant to IT and vice versa. I get to see and understand how an IT solution can help an organisation flourish and even expand to become a global company.

UTS was my first preference because it provided me with the flexibility to study two degrees at once without putting much pressure on my social life. The relaxed environment allows you to interact with all students no matter which faculty they are from, and because of its location there’s so much to do during breaks. It’s very different to high school in a sense that you don’t have a rigid structure to your day and you’re free to move around.

UTS:IT places emphasis on building social networks that help you get through that daunting first day at university, your first year and even throughout your whole time at university. The older students organise a camp which helps the new students with the transition from high school to uni. I found that this camp was so helpful because I didn’t know anyone in my course. It was so beneficial, that I decided to help organise camp when I entered my second year. Not only did my involvement in this help me with my leadership and project management skills but it also tripled the amount of people that say hi to me on campus!

Social networking is so important because you’ll find that sometimes it’s the people you know that will help you get that job. UTS has so many clubs where people with mutual interests can meet. For example, I am a member of BiG which is the IT student society. Each club holds social events that allow its members a chance to have fun and reduce stress.

UTS also presents you with so many opportunities, in the past year I was able to take part in a business skills program known as Young Achievement Australia (YAA), where a group of students run their own company from start to liquidation, developing a product and selling that product. The company, which I was a part of, was able to apply the theory we learn at uni in a real life situation whilst making a difference in the fight to save the environment.

I was also lucky enough to be offered a place as a student promotional representative (SPROUT). I not only get to talk to high school students about my course, my experience with the HSC and how much studying at UTS has benefited me, but it also helps me develop essential skills needed in my business and IT majors.
Choosing to study at IT at UTS was probably the best decision I have made so far because UTS:IT develops creative and innovative IT professionals who have the sky as their limit!"
