Reducing car use through transport demand management

A seminar on Sustainable Mobility with guest speaker Todd Litman was hosted by ISF and Insurance Group Australia (IAG) on Wednesday 19 November.

Cost effective and technologically feasible strategies and incentives for more efficient and equitable transportation include giving consumers more choice, creating more balance in the transport system, and removing market distortions.

Transport is a significant contributor to climate change in Australia. Despite this, the growth in Vehicle Kilometres Traveled (VKT) continues to increase faster than population. Our current path of transport development also contributes to other significant key environmental and social issues.

Todd Litman discussed his experiences as the principal author of the Online Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Encyclopedia. He also provided insight into how “Least Cost Planning” can be used as a framework to implement a suite of options to move towards more Sustainable Mobility and explain how it will take multiple stakeholders to create this momentum.

Todd Litman is founder and executive director of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute (VTPI), a Canadian based, independent research organisation dedicated to developing innovative solutions to transportation problems. His research is used worldwide in transportation planning and policy analysis.
