Cameron talks about the new desalination plant in Sydney. She wants to know what the role of the desalination plant is. Stuart White, Institute of Sustainable Futures - UTS, says the desalination plant is not required and not needed for a sustainable water future. White says the plant should not be started by the NSW Govt until dam levels fall very low because it costs incredible amounts of money to run and will be the most expensive water. Cameron says the plant will be on when dam levels are below 70% and off when they are above 80%. White says this is extravagant, but he is not savvy as to what was in the contract with the private operators. He says the cost to be imposed on water consumers will be over $100 a year extra on water bills. He says this is a complete waste of money and does not need to be spent. He says Sydney is not in drought now and dam levels are rising.
