Mining new ideas to help boost industry

Australian mining companies will meet with international experts, government and community leaders this weekend to map out a national mining and innovation strategy.

IJTS Institute for Sustainable Futures Research Director, Dr Damien Giurco, says mineral production in Australia is increasing, but each year it gets harder and costlier to extract the same amount of resources.

While we’re digging and selling faster than ever, the discoveries of new ore bodies aren’t coming at anywhere near the same rate," Giurco said. "We must think more creatively about how we capture value from what’s left in the ground."
