It’s been talked about for years but now there’s a new push to make it happen. About 8 billion beverage containers ayear end up in land fill or as litter, but industry and senior bureaucrats tell the community and governments that a container deposit system is expensive and won’t do enough for litter. They couldn’t be more wrong. Such a system will lift recycling to a new level and be a financial boon to local government, charities and new environment programs... The institute for sustainable futures at the University of Technology, Sydney, has estimated that a container deposit system will create up to 1500 newjobs working in collection depots, op crating trucks and maintaining reverse vending machines.
