Reyes discusses kangaroo culling and critics rethinking its sustainability. Keely Boom, Research Fellow, THINKK, University of Technology Sydney says the conclusion they have reached from their research is that people were more aware of joey culls and methods of killing they would be seen as a major animal welfare issue. Michael Kermode, Journalist says reports coming out of THINKK claim it is time to review legislation on the harvest and culling of kangaroos nationally. Boom says there is a strong case for a need for greater regulation, and mention issues of remote shooting by part time shooting not being regulated to the same extent as the killing of livestock in abattoirs. Kermode says THINKK's reports also seek to draw attention to the fact that kangaroos are still being culled under misconceptions of their pest status. Boom says previous kangaroo management plans were based on kangaroos being pests, and says they are not pests under law. She says in the last few years kangaroos are treated as a resource, and the issue is that there has been a goal shift but farmers and shooters are given licenses on damage mitigation grounds
