Biography
Dr Michelle Zeibots is a transport planner, specialising in the analysis of sustainable urban passenger transport systems. Her research and consultancy work draws together operational, behavioral and administrative aspects of urban transport networks.
Originally trained in architectural design science at the University of Sydney, Michelle joined the Institute for Sustainable Futures to carry out doctoral research on induced traffic growth, which refers to the large and sudden increases in traffic volumes that occur after the opening of new urban motorways. Little research had been undertaken of the phenomenon under Australian conditions before Michelle’s work, which makes contributions through two case studies of the M4 and M5 Motorways in addition to a theoretical contribution where Michelle articulated the structure of the positive feedback loop that causes the travel behavior response. This work has resulted in a range of consultancies for government agencies in Australia and overseas and a recommendation to include induced traffic growth in pre-construction assessments of urban motorways as a means of better understanding their sustainability implications.
Before joining ISF, Michelle worked with Prof Jeff Kenworthy and Dr Felix Laube on the Millennium Cities Database for the International Association of Public Transport Providers (UITP) that involved a database of 80 international cities, comprising 64 standardised indicators describing road and mass transit infrastructures, land-use patterns, economic and environmental characteristics of the cities as well as urban amenity and accident statistics.
Michelle has also undertaken research on Workplace Travel Planning, peak oil impacts on the transport sector, project management frameworks for the delivery of transport infrastructure projects and community engagement practices in the transport sector. She is keen to support and supervise students wishing to carry out doctoral research in a variety of areas of sustainable transport.
