Biography

Emma is a qualitative social researcher with extensive experience in policy, research and consulting contexts. Her work focuses on the social dimensions of sustainability, the interrelationship between environmental issues and social and cultural issues, the links between sustainability and social justice, and strategies for achieving sustainability in the urban environment. She has published a theoretical framework for social sustainability, and given presentations on social sustainability in various contexts.

As a researcher, she offers theoretical knowledge and practical experience of research methodologies, including extensive literature reviews and interviewing techniques as well as consultation and management of large survey projects. Her work has included local community consultations and liaison and negotiation with key stakeholders for the purpose of policy development and implementation.

Emma has a keen interest in improving the quality of democratic participation and engagement, and has contributed to the prestigious Democratic Audit of Australia, co-authoring the gender report; How well does Australian democracy serve Australian women? (2007) and the sexuality report; How well does Australian democracy serve sexual and gender minorities? (2007). In late 2009 she took up a one-month Visiting Guest Professorship at the University of Connecticut, in the United States, to present on and develop this work. She has also contributed to a major international research project for the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2), exploring public-government decision-making, and investigating issues relating to community consultation, participation and and citizen engagement.

Emma has extensive experience undertaking work in the local government sector, on a range of sustainability, community engagement and strategic planning projects. She has also undertaken various research, evaluation and capacity building projects for the non-government/community sector.

Emma has considerable knowledge and experience of the public policy process and worked in various senior research and policy development roles in the state and commonwealth public sector before joining ISF. This work focused on issues relating to women, children and young people, juvenile justice and community services.
