Biography

Julian is a researcher in the field of water resource management with a background in environmental engineering and sustainability. He has worked at the Institute for Sustainable Futures (ISF) since 2007, contributing to and managing a range of water, wastewater and waste related projects. His research at ISF has encompassed a broad range of fields including urban water demand forecasting and planning, distributed water and wastewater infrastructure options scoping, modelling and assessment, savings evaluation (water and energy), development of industrial ecology, management of food waste, sustainable housing development and more. Julian has also worked periodically as an independent consultant to the Sydney Catchment Authority on dairy shed effluent management and water quality since 2005.

Whilst involved in industry research at ISF and as a contractor, Julian has been concurrently working on his PhD on dairy shed effluent management looking at waste minimisation, wastewater treatment and recycling and resource recovery. This is a continuation of research that Julian initiated in 1999 as part of his honours project and then extended to a masters by research project in 2000. Prior to joining ISF, Julian lectured and tutored undergraduate and post graduate subjects including engineering in pollution control and cleaner production, solid and hazardous waste management, and engineering fluid dynamics at the University of Wollongong.

With extensive research and analytical experience in fields ranging from urban water planning to resource recovery in agriculture, Julian has an astute awareness of the technical, economic, policy and practical aspects of sustainability. He has the ability to convey the methods and outputs from complex analyses to various audiences to help inform and communicate evidence-based decision making. He also has well-developed project management and leadership skills and is developing a strong record for generating new research opportunities through the quality of his work.
