The Essence of Big Data and Data Science

Speaker: Tiberio Caetano is a Principal Researcher in NICTA’s Machine Learning Research Group and Scientific Lead at NICTA’s Big Data for Enterprise project (Ambiata).

Seminar Chairman: Associate Professor Jinyan Li (jinyan.li@uts.edu.au).

You are invited to the AAI Friday Seminar on Friday 30 August 2013 featuring Tiberio Caetano presenting his topic: The Essence of Big Data and Data Science.

Abstract:

The terms “big data” and “data science” recently became buzzwords in the enterprise world. This talk is about trying to make sense of what are the essential aspects of the issue, and is partly inspired by personal learnings while working with customers trying to solve business problems in the enterprise environment. This talk will not focus on research results (although glimpses of some will be shown) but rather propose a way to think about “big data” and “data science”, as well as define which are some major challenges in the area and the extent to which they are being addressed or neglected.

Short biography of the speaker:

Tiberio Caetano is a Principal Researcher in NICTA’s Machine Learning Research Group and Scientific Lead at NICTA’s Big Data for Enterprise project (Ambiata). He also has adjunct academic appointments at the ANU and the University of Sydney. As an undergraduate he studied Electrical Engineering with research in Theoretical Physics, and he obtained his PhD in Computer Science, with highest distinction, from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil, in 2004. During his PhD he was a visiting student at the University of Alberta, where he was also a postdoc before joining NICTA. He has published over 50 scientific papers in areas including machine learning, pattern recognition, computer vision, computational biology, complex networks and chaos theory. His current research interests are mainly focused on big data, including its technical aspects as well as its applications and implications.

Overview to AAI seminar series
