(CSARM) Short Courses Series - Module D: Contaminants and Toxicity

This module is one of six in the series developed with the support of Contaminated Sites Section of DECCW. The modules are designed to provide opportunities for professionals working in or intending to enter the field of contaminated site assessment, remediation and management (CSARM) to update and enhance their knowledge in this multi-disciplinary area.

The goal of contaminated land management and site auditing is to ensure the protection of human health and the environment. The assessment of likely harm is underpinned by the evaluation of contaminant toxicity to humans and all other organisms. An understanding of the basis of toxicological tests and their contribution to investigations of the levels of contaminants and the development of guidelines is the essential knowledge for all environmental professionals involved in contaminated site assessment, management and restoration.

This module is designed to extend an understanding of the principles of human and ecological toxicology that underpin risk assessment processes for contaminated sites and policy development in environmental protection arena. It is complimentary to Module E which specifically addresses risk assessment issues.

• Role of toxicology in CSARM; exposure scenarios
• Evaluation of human toxicity data
• Workshop on toxicology in Human Health Risk AssessmentsPrinciples of ecosystem protection
• Toxicity assessment and appropriate use of toxicity testing
• Case studies on fate and transport of contaminants in context of onsite management.

Presenters

The teaching team will include: regulators from NSW OEH; specialists from industry; UTS Science and Curtin University; site auditors.

Continuing Professional Education

Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance which can be used as credit towards Continuing Professional Development programs run by Engineers Australia, Australian and New Zealand Institute of Environmental Health, Australian Soil Sciences institute and Environmental Health Australia.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Successful completion of CSARM short course assessment tasks gives participants a Certificate of Completion which can be used as recognition of prior learning for the UTS MSc (Environmental Change Management) program. Please refer to the UTS Handbook for more information.
